Each year, thousands of Americans are diagnosed with melanoma—the most serious form of skin cancer. And while treatment options and early detection tools continue to evolve, one fact remains: early detection saves lives.

At DermPhysicians of New England, we’re committed to helping our patients stay informed, vigilant, and protected. Here’s what you need to know about melanoma in 2025.

What Is Melanoma?

Melanoma develops in the pigment-producing cells of the skin (melanocytes). While it most commonly appears on sun-exposed areas like the back, arms, legs, and face, it can also show up in unexpected places, including under nails, on the scalp, or the soles of the feet.

Why Early Detection Still Matters

Melanoma is highly treatable when caught early, but it can spread quickly if left undetected. That’s why we emphasize monthly self-checks and annual professional skin exams. In 2025, we also recommend taking advantage of digital mole-mapping tools and AI-assisted dermoscopy when available.

Use the ABCDE Rule:

To assess moles and skin spots at home, keep the ABCDEs in mind:

  • Asymmetry – One half doesn’t match the other
  • Border – Irregular, jagged, or blurred edges
  • Color – Multiple or uneven colors
  • Diameter – Larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser)
  • Evolving – Changes in size, shape, color, or texture

Notice something new or changing? Don’t wait. Schedule a professional skin check.

Sun Safety Is Still Essential

UV exposure remains one of the leading causes of melanoma, and one blistering sunburn during childhood can double your lifetime risk. In 2025, we’re seeing a rise in cases linked to daily incidental sun exposure—think short walks, driving, or even sitting near a window.

Protect your skin daily with these dermatologist-approved tips:

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) and reapply every 2 hours
  • Wear sun-protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses.
  • Seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Avoid tanning beds entirely.

Make Skin Checks a 2025 Habit

Skin exams are a critical part of preventive care, and our board-certified dermatologists are here to guide you every step of the way. Whether you have a family history of skin cancer or simply want peace of mind, now’s the time to schedule your annual skin check.
