What are warts?

Warts are harmless and very common skin growths caused by a skin virus called HPV. They can grow on any part of the body and their appearance depends on their location. Both children and adults can develop warts. Warts on the bottom of the feet are called plantar warts and can be painful with pressure.

What are the causes?

Since warts are caused by a virus, they are slightly contagious. We don’t know why some people get warts easily while others never get them. There is no truly effective way to prevent warts.

Treating Warts

There is no perfect treatment for warts, but there are many options. They are harmless and can be left alone; eventually they will disappear, but this can take years. Treatment options depend on the age of the patient, the location and size of the wart(s), as well as your skin type. At DermPhysicians we can review the many treatment options with you and determine which is best for you or your child. Our providers are trained in both pediatric and adult dermatology.
