What causes wrinkles?

Wrinkles are caused by a combination of repetitive facial movements, sun damage, and the loss of collagen. Together these factors create the environment for lines and folds to become more prominent. As we get older, our bodies lose elastin and collagen, which function is to keep our skin hydrated, firm, and elastic. With repeated facial expressions over time, it becomes harder and harder for our skin to bounce back to an “expressionless” state. Sun exposure is a major factor in the appearance of wrinkles and the aging process.

What are some of the most common facial wrinkles?

As a result of aging skin, crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines all eventually develop.

Crow’s feet are the name for the lines around the outer corner of the eyes. Squinting in the sun can cause and worsen these lines. Forehead lines can be both horizontal and vertical on the forehead. Frown lines (also known as the “11s”), are the lines that form between the eyebrows.

With advancements in cosmetic technology, it is now easier than ever to address these fine lines and wrinkles.

Treating wrinkles

Wrinkles can be treated with injectables and non-invasive laser treatments.* Botox is one of the most effective and popular treatments for fine lines & wrinkles.* Botox is a neuromodulator that relaxes the facial muscles and softens crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines.* EpiFacial skin rejuvenation uses IPL (intense pulsed light) to stimulate new collagen in the skin. This helps to diminish wrinkles by increasing firmness and flexibility of the skin.* We also provide chemical peels and Hydrafacial treatments to help you fight the signs of aging skin through exfoliation and proper hydration.

Designing a skincare regimen for prevention of skin-aging and wrinkles is ideal. Starting a prevention routine earlier is the best approach. DermPhysicians of New England can develop a program tailored to your skin and its needs to help ward off the signs of aging.
